Printmaking

japan1.jpg - 45436 Bytes In studying Linoleum Block Printing, we look to Japan. Although woodblock printing was developed in China around 400 BC, hundreds of years later the art form spread to Japan where it became a specialized skill.

In Japan, nature's forces are glorified and worshipped with awe and affection. The awesome sense of beauty in nature is inherent in art and religion.

In class we gouge, or carve, blocks of linoleum rather than wood. Images are printed several times and matted.
